Trees are essential organs of the biosphere.
They maintain a healthy soil structure, the balance of the ground water
table and the microclimate, a benevolent state of air electricity and even
the force of the magnetic field of the Earth.
Soil erosion, floods, landslides, magnetic storms as well as changes in
weather and climate are inevitable effects of global deforestation.
Since the dawn of consciousness, humans have chosen the presence of old,
mighty trees for ritual and prayer, for contemplation, council and community
gatherings, and for the deeper study of the laws of life, nature and spirit.
An abundance of evidence for this reaches back six thousand years and more.

Times are a-changing:
Major British footwear companies are now demanding information from
their leather suppliers wether the material is sourced from cattle
grazing on illegally deforested lands in the Amazon. And British
supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Marks & Spencer) have begun to
boycott beef from such farms. Three major chains in Brazil –
Wal-Mart, Carrefour and Pao de Acucar –
had already taken action before the British (The Guardian, 3
August 2009).
Nevertheless, the daily loss of rainforest is astronomic. As the
Prince of Wales says:
'If we
lose the battle against tropical deforestation, we lose the battle
against climate change.'
